Top Ten Nursing Issues for 2008: Harm Reduction

Harm Reduction
This important issue addresses programs that intend to reduce the ill-effects that are typically associated with dangerous and potentially dangerous lifestyle choices. These programs are broad in scope and can range from designated driver/drunk driving awareness campaigns to condom/birth control distribution in public schools and public needle exchange programs for those addicted to drugs in our nation.

While supporters of these types of harm reduction programs tout the burden that it takes off of the public health care system, most critics of the programs assert that these programs condone and even support the very behaviors that are intended to be eliminated. Nurses, travel nurses and other health care providers often find themselves stuck in the middle of this debate, as a large portion of these providers are involved in the administering of harm reduction services. While the fact that harm reduction is a critical issue facing healthcare today, an overall general consensus is missing and the debate regarding harm reduction is costing precious time and resources that could be put toward the problem.
